1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Back at the hotel Hurstwood was anxious and yet fearful to seethe morning papers. He wanted to know how far the news of hiscriminal deed had spread. So he told Carrie he would be up in afew moments, and went to secure and scan the dailies. Nofamiliar or suspicious faces were about, and yet he did not likereading in the lobby, so he sought the main parlour on the floorabove and, seated by a window there, looked them over. Verylittle was given to his crime, but it was there, several "sticks"in all, among all the riffraff of telegraphed murders, accidents, marriages, and other news. He wished, half sadly, that he couldundo it all. Every moment of his time in this far-off abode ofsafety but added to his feeling that he had made a great mistake. There could have been an easier way out if he had only known.
2. He was brought out of this feeling by the sudden appearance of acurve ahead, which he had not expected. He shut off the currentand did an energetic turn at the brake, but not in time to avoidan unnaturally quick turn. It shook him up and made him feellike making some apologetic remarks, but he refrained.
3. The old illusion that here was some one who needed her aid beganto grow in Carrie's mind. She truly pitied this sad, lonelyfigure. To think that all his fine state should be so barren forwant of her; that he needed to make such an appeal when sheherself was lonely and without anchor. Surely, this was too bad.
4. He now turned his attention to Mrs. Vance, and in a flash Carriesaw again what she for some time had subconsciously missed inHurstwood--the adroitness and flattery of which he was capable. She also saw that she was not well dressed--not nearly as welldressed--as Mrs. Vance. These were not vague ideas any longer. Her situation was cleared up for her. She felt that her life wasbecoming stale, and therein she felt cause for gloom. The oldhelpful, urging melancholy was restored. The desirous Carrie waswhispered to concerning her possibilities.
5. "Anyhow," said Carrie, "I shouldn't want to get married as longas he is here. I wouldn't want to run away."
6. "I'll be glad to go," said Carrie. "How much will we have to payfor seats?"

1. "I'm connected with an electrical company," said the youth.
2. The first gleam of fairness shone in this proposition for Carrie. It seemed a plausible thing to do, much as she feared hisopposition if she tried to carry it out. Montreal and New York!Even now she was speeding toward those great, strange lands, andcould see them if she liked. She thought, but made no sign.
3. He was let loose and recovered himself. Now he recognised twoofficers. He felt as if he would faint from exhaustion.Something was wet on his chin. He put up his hand and felt, thenlooked. It was red.

5. He looked rather worsted in thought as he stood before her.
6. He looked at her tenderly, but received no reply."You think I have deceived you badly, but I haven't. I didn't doit willingly. I'm through with my wife. She hasn't any claimson me. I'll never see her any more. That's why I'm here to-night. That's why I came and got you."

1. "I remember," said Carrie.
2. "Any answer?"
3. "That isn't so bad," said the author, the manager noting thecurious effect which Carrie's blues had upon the part. "Tell herto frown a little more when Sparks dances."
4. "Oh, nothing, only he hasn't been here since you got back."
5. "Did you?" asked Carrie.
6. "Sixteen dollars," he replied.

1. "Frown a little more, Miss Madenda," said the stage manager.
2. During the remainder of the week it was very much the same. Oneor two nights she found herself too tired to walk home, andexpended car fare. She was not very strong, and sitting all dayaffected her back. She went to bed one night before Hanson.
3. The latter caught in a glance the dimensions of a very stalwartfigure. She also noticed that he was smooth-shaven, goodlooking, and young, but nothing more.
4、 Hurstwood at first sympathised with the demands of these men--indeed, it is a question whether he did not always sympathisewith them to the end, belie him as his actions might. Readingnearly all the news, he was attracted first by the scare-headswith which the trouble was noted in the "World." He read itfully--the names of the seven companies involved, the number ofmen.
5、 "Hello," remarked one of the stout-wristed sole-workers to her atnoon. "You're a daisy." He really expected to hear the common"Aw! go chase yourself!" in return, and was sufficiently abashed,by Carrie's silently moving away, to retreat, awkwardly grinning.

No one responded. He walked to and fro, looking down for severalminutes, occasionally saying softly: "Eighteen cents." It seemedas if this paltry sum would delay the desired culmination longerthan all the rest had. Hurstwood, buoyed up slightly by the longline of which he was a part, refrained with an effort fromgroaning, he was so weak.

This white column consisted of some twenty girls, all in snow-white flannel trimmed with silver and blue. Its leader was moststunningly arrayed in the same colours, elaborated, however, withepaulets and a belt of silver, with a short sword dangling at oneside. Carrie was fitted for this costume, and a few days laterappeared, proud of her new laurels. She was especially gratifiedto find that her salary was now eighteen instead of twelve.

He took out the drawer again and lifted the bills. They were sosmooth, so compact, so portable. How little they made, afterall. He decided he would take them. Yes, he would. He wouldput them in his pocket. Then he looked at that and saw theywould not go there. His hand satchel! To be sure, his handsatchel. They would go in that--all of it would. No one wouldthink anything of it either. He went into the little office andtook it from the shelf in the corner. Now he set it upon hisdesk and went out toward the safe. For some reason he did notwant to fill it out in the big room.First he brought the bills and then the loose receipts of theday. He would take it all. He put the empty drawers back andpushed the iron door almost to, then stood beside it meditating.
