1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "I'll look at them if you say so," said Carrie.
2. "Pretty soon," said Drouet.
3. "I know that big guy that called us a --- --- --- ----" said thefirst. "I'll get him yet for that."
4. Not long after this matinee experience--perhaps a month--Mrs.Vance invited Carrie to an evening at the theatre with them. Sheheard Carrie say that Hurstwood was not coming home to dinner.
5. Many little wrinkles gathered between his eyes as he contemplatedthis, and his brow moistened. He saw no solution of anything--not a loophole left.
6. "Yes, sir."

1. Then he looked about upon a dingy, moth-eaten hotel lobby.
2. But now see wherein the parallel changes. A fortune, like a man,is an organism which draws to itself other minds and otherstrength than that inherent in the founder. Beside the youngminds drawn to it by salaries, it becomes allied with youngforces, which make for its existence even when the strength andwisdom of the founder are fading. It may be conserved by thegrowth of a community or of a state. It may be involved inproviding something for which there is a growing demand. Thisremoves it at once beyond the special care of the founder. Itneeds not so much foresight now as direction. The man wanes, theneed continues or grows, and the fortune, fallen into whose handsit may, continues. Hence, some men never recognise the turningin the tide of their abilities. It is only in chance cases, where a fortune or a state of success is wrested from them, thatthe lack of ability to do as they did formerly becomes apparent.Hurstwood, set down under new conditions, was in a position tosee that he was no longer young. If he did not, it was duewholly to the fact that his state was so well balanced that anabsolute change for the worse did not show.
3. She came in and sat down at her place, feeling exceedinglywretched.
4. She was now one of a group of oriental beauties who, in thesecond act of the comic opera, were paraded by the vizier beforethe new potentate as the treasures of his harem. There was noword assigned to any of them, but on the evening when Hurstwoodwas housing himself in the loft of the street-car barn, theleading comedian and star, feeling exceedingly facetious, said ina profound voice, which created a ripple of laughter:
5. He was almost moved to some muscular display as he thought of it.He decided to go immediately after supper.
6. For all this, he still retained the semblance of leadership andcontrol, even though his wife was straining to revolt. Herdisplay of temper and open assertion of opposition were basedupon nothing more than the feeling that she could do it. She hadno special evidence wherewith to justify herself--the knowledgeof something which would give her both authority and excuse. Thelatter was all that was lacking, however, to give a solidfoundation to what, in a way, seemed groundless discontent. Theclear proof of one overt deed was the cold breath needed toconvert the lowering clouds of suspicion into a rain of wrath.

1. "Well, I don't know," said Carrie, smiling.
2. "Then," he thought, "she loves me or she would not have writtento me at all."
3. "Well, we'll have to wait here, boys, until some one does.Twelve cents isn't so very much for one man."
4. On this account he still devoted some time to showing his wifeabout--time which would have been wearisome indeed if it had notbeen for the people he would meet and the little enjoyments whichdid not depend upon her presence or absence. He watched her withconsiderable curiosity at times, for she was still attractive ina way and men looked at her. She was affable, vain, subject toflattery, and this combination, he knew quite well, might producea tragedy in a woman of her home position. Owing to his order ofmind, his confidence in the sex was not great. His wife neverpossessed the virtues which would win the confidence andadmiration of a man of his nature. As long as she loved himvigorously he could see how confidence could be, but when thatwas no longer the binding chain--well, something might happen.
5. It was not long before the imbibing began to tell. Stories beganto crop up--those ever-enduring, droll stories which form themajor portion of the conversation among American men under suchcircumstances.
6. Drouet was reminded of his promise a day or two later by thereceipt of a letter announcing that the first rehearsal was setfor the following Friday evening, and urging him to kindlyforward the young lady's address at once, in order that the partmight be delivered to her.

1. "I couldn't get home last evening," she said.
2. As a consequence, she was resentful and suspicious. The jealousythat prompted her to observe every falling away from the littleamenities of the married relation on his part served to give hernotice of the airy grace with which he still took the world. Shecould see from the scrupulous care which he exercised in thematter of his personal appearance that his interest in life hadabated not a jot. Every motion, every glance had something in itof the pleasure he felt in Carrie, of the zest this new pursuitof pleasure lent to his days. Mrs. Hurstwood felt something, sniffing change, as animals do danger, afar off.
3. Carrie looked at him curiously. She hardly knew how to continuethe inquiry.
4、 The place that had been so comfortable, where he had spent somany days of warmth, was now a memory. Something colder andchillier confronted him. He sank down in his chair, resting hischin in his hand--mere sensation, without thought, holding him.
5、 "Hello," remarked one of the stout-wristed sole-workers to her atnoon. "You're a daisy." He really expected to hear the common"Aw! go chase yourself!" in return, and was sufficiently abashed,by Carrie's silently moving away, to retreat, awkwardly grinning.

"I'd like to for a week or so, if you don't mind," venturedCarrie.

"What makes you put so much butter on the steak?" he asked herone evening, standing around in the kitchen.

It was about this time that the newspapers and magazines werebeginning to pay that illustrative attention to the beauties ofthe stage which has since become fervid. The newspapers, andparticularly the Sunday newspapers, indulged in large decorativetheatrical pages, in which the faces and forms of well-knowntheatrical celebrities appeared, enclosed with artistic scrolls. The magazines also or at least one or two of the newer ones--published occasional portraits of pretty stars, and now and againphotos of scenes from various plays. Carrie watched these withgrowing interest. When would a scene from her opera appear? Whenwould some paper think her photo worth while?

"That's right," he said; "I'm no good now. I was all right. Ihad money. I'm going to quit this," and, with death in hisheart, he started down toward the Bowery. People had turned onthe gas before and died; why shouldn't he? He remembered alodginghouse where there were little, close rooms, with gas-jetsin them, almost pre-arranged, he thought, for what he wanted todo, which rented for fifteen cents. Then he remembered that hehad no fifteen cents.

Hurstwood heard this, dead to the horror of it. He rocked alittle to and fro, and chewed at his finger. It seemed all verynatural in such extreme states. He would do better later on.

And yet she was not grieved at Hurstwood's love. No strain ofbitterness was in it for her, whatever he knew. He was evidentlysincere. His passion was real and warm. There was power in whathe said. What should she do? She went on thinking this, answering vaguely, languishing affectionately, and altogetherdrifting, until she was on a borderless sea of speculation.

Carrie looked at her gratefully. "I guess I will," she said.

"Where is the conductor?" yelled one of the officers, getting hiseye on that individual, who had come nervously forward to standby Hurstwood. The latter had stood gazing upon the scene withmore astonishment than fear.
