1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Her beauty, her wit, her accomplishments, she may sell to you;but her love is the treasure without money and without price."
2. "She said it was high time."
3. He tightened his fingers as he saw the smile she gave him.
4. "Is that so?" said the friend. "Glad to hear it. I'll come downand see you."
5. "We won't stay here long," said Hurstwood, who was now reallyglad to note her dissatisfaction. "You pick out your clothes assoon as breakfast is over and we'll run down to New York soon. You'll like that. It's a lot more like a city than any placeoutside Chicago."
6. "I don't want you to do it all," he said. "I only want a littlehelp until I can get something to do."

1. On Sunday evening Carrie dined with him at a place he hadselected in East Adams Street, and thereafter they took a cab towhat was then a pleasant evening resort out on Cottage GroveAvenue near 39th Street. In the process of his declaration hesoon realised that Carrie took his love upon a higher basis thanhe had anticipated. She kept him at a distance in a ratherearnest way, and submitted only to those tender tokens ofaffection which better become the inexperienced lover. Hurstwoodsaw that she was not to be possessed for the asking, and deferredpressing his suit too warmly.
2. "A dozen times," repeated Carrie, guiltily. "No, but what do youmean?"
3. "Captain's a great feller, ain't he?" said the man ahead--alittle, woebegone, helpless-looking sort of individual, wholooked as though he had ever been the sport and care of fortune.
4. The next evening Carrie was called out, much as if for an error.
5. "And they have to work so hard!" was her only comment.
6. He looked down at his paper and shook his head negatively.

1. It was very evident that it did not concern him much, save fromthe side of the flat's success. He was irritated a shade becauseit could not have come about in the throw of fortune for Carrieto be pleased.
2. "Mercy!" interrupted Carrie. "I couldn't pay any such rate asthat."
3. "A little," said Carrie.
4. "What the hell!" cried another of the strikers, pushing the otherway, adding at the same time some lusty oaths.
5. "Mr. Stevens," he said, referring to the author, "is preparing alittle song, which he would like you to sing next week."
6. "You mustn't forget to leave me my money for this week," saidCarrie, quietly.

1. "Certainly," said Carrie. "You know how often he came."
2. Without being clear, there was something in the thought which heobjected to. He did not believe any more, after three years ofobservation, that Carrie would ever do anything great in thatline. She seemed too simple, too yielding. His idea of the artwas that it involved something more pompous. If she tried to geton the stage she would fall into the hands of some cheap managerand become like the rest of them. He had a good idea of what hemeant by THEM. Carrie was pretty. She would get along allright, but where would he be?
3. Carrie stood looking while the lady retired to her office.
4、 He called a cab and was driven through the dreary rain to theNorth Side. On the way his temper cooled as he thought of thedetails of the case. What did she know? What had she done? Maybeshe'd got hold of Carrie, who knows--or--or Drouet. Perhaps shereally had evidence, and was prepared to fell him as a man doesanother from secret ambush. She was shrewd. Why should shetaunt him this way unless she had good grounds?
5、 This interest of the manager was a large thing in itself for theperformance, for his standing among the Elks was something worthtalking about. Already he was thinking of a box with somefriends, and flowers for Carrie. He would make it a dress-suitaffair and give the little girl a chance.

"If you didn't make a hit, you know," he went on.

This pleased Hurstwood immensely. He gave Drouet no credit forany feelings toward Carrie whatever. He envied him, and now, ashe looked at the well-dressed jolly salesman, whom he so muchliked, the gleam of the rival glowed in his eye. He began to"size up" Drouet from the standpoints of wit and fascination. Hebegan to look to see where he was weak. There was no disputingthat, whatever he might think of him as a good fellow, he felt acertain amount of contempt for him as a lover. He could hoodwinkhim all right. Why, if he would just let Carrie see one suchlittle incident as that of Thursday, it would settle the matter. He ran on in thought, almost exulting, the while he laughed andchatted, and Drouet felt nothing. He had no power of analysingthe glance and the atmosphere of a man like Hurstwood. He stoodand smiled and accepted the invitation while his friend examinedhim with the eye of a hawk.

{ "And I'm telling you," he returned, fixing a clear, steady eye onher, "that it's no easy thing to get. I'm not sure whether themanager will give it to me."

When he had finished it, he stood holding it in his hands. Theaudacity of the thing took his breath. It roused his ire also--the deepest element of revolt in him. His first impulse was towrite but four words in reply--"Go to the devil!"--but hecompromised by telling the boy that there would be no reply. Then he sat down in his chair and gazed without seeing, contemplating the result of his work. What would she do aboutthat? The confounded wretch! Was she going to try to bulldoze himinto submission? He would go up there and have it out with her, that's what he would do. She was carrying things with too high ahand. These were his first thoughts.

"Ah, yes," said the latter, when she applied; "Miss Madenda--onehundred and fifty dollars. Quite a success the show seems tohave made."

Hurstwood read this, formulating to himself his own idea of whatwould be the outcome. He was a great believer in the strength ofcorporations.

{ On the other hand, her own feelings were a corrective influence. The constant drag to something better was not to be denied. Bythose things which address the heart was she steadily recalled. In the apartments across the hall were a young girl and hermother. They were from Evansville, Indiana, the wife anddaughter of a railroad treasurer. The daughter was here to studymusic, the mother to keep her company.

An inkling of untoward deeds on the part of Hurstwood had come.Doctor Beale, the handsome resident physician of theneighbourhood, met Mrs. Hurstwood at her own doorstep some daysafter Hurstwood and Carrie had taken the drive west on WashingtonBoulevard. Dr. Beale, coming east on the same drive, hadrecognised Hurstwood, but not before he was quite past him. Hewas not so sure of Carrie--did not know whether it wasHurstwood's wife or daughter.
