1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Yours very truly,
2. "Save, perhaps, the Sign of Four."
3. "Friday!" he cried. "Only three clear days. I believe the rascalwants to put himself out of danger's way. But he won't, Watson! By theLord Harry, he won't! Now, Watson, I want you to do something for me.""I am here to be used, Holmes."
4. It seemed to me that something like a wink quivered for an instantover one of Mr. Baynes's tiny eyes.
5. "Very likely. It would certainly be a dangerous exploit for anynormal man."
6. "Is she gone, Watson? Is there a spark left? Surely we are not toolate!"

1. Far away, from among the Kentish woods there rose a thin spray ofsmoke. A minute later a carriage and engine could be seen flying alongthe open curve which leads to the station. We had hardly time totake our place behind a pile of luggage when it passed with a rattleand a roar, beating a blast of hot air into our faces.
2. "Dispatched at 2:10 from Little Purlington," said Holmes. "LittlePurlington is in Essex, I believe, not far from Frinton. Well, ofcourse you will start at once. This is evidently from a responsibleperson, the vicar of the place. Where is my Crockford? Yes, here wehave him: J.C. Elman, M.A., Living of Moosmoor cum Little Purlington.'Look up the trains, Watson."
3. "I've got my facts pretty clear," said Stanley Hopkins. "All Iwant now is to know what they all mean. The story, so far as I canmake it out, is like this. Some years ago this country house, YoxleyOld Place, was taken by an elderly man, who gave the name of ProfessorCoram. He was an invalid, keeping his bed half the time, and the otherhalf hobbling round the house with a stick or being pushed about thegrounds by the gardener in a Bath chair. He was well liked by thefew neighbours who called upon him, and he has the reputation downthere of being a very learned man. His household used to consist of anelderly housekeeper, Mrs. Marker, and of a maid, Susan Tarlton. These have both been with him since his arrival, and they seem to bewomen of excellent character. The professor is writing a learned book, and he found it necessary, about a year ago, to engage a secretary. The first two that he tried were not successes, but the third, Mr.Willoughby Smith, a very young man straight from the university, seemsto have been just what his employer wanted. His work consisted inwriting all the morning to the professor's dictation, and he usuallyspent the evening in hunting up references and passages which boreupon the next day's work. This Willoughby Smith has nothing againsthim, either as a boy at Uppingham or as a young man at Cambridge. Ihave seen his testimonials, and from the first he was a decent, quiet,hard-worlding fellow, with no weak spot in him at all. And yet this isthe lad who has met his death this morning in the professor's studyunder circumstances which can point only to murder."
4. "Perfectly so."
5. "Yes, sir. He and a girl of fourteen, who does a bit ofsimple cooking and keeps the place clean--that's all I have in thehouse, for I am a widower and never had any family. We live veryquietly, sir, the three of us; and we keep a roof over our headsand pay our debts, if we do nothing more.
6. "What are you going to do, then?" I asked.

1. "She is there," said Holmes, and he pointed to a high bookcase inthe corner of the room.
2. "Nothing of the sort," I said, putting my back to the door. "Anypolice interference would bring about the very catastrophe which youdread." I took out my notebook and scribbled one word upon a loosesheet. "That," said I as I handed it to Colonel Emsworth, "is what hasbrought us here."
3. "Pure swank!" Holmes answered. "He felt so clever and so sure ofhimself that he imagined no one could touch him. He could say to anysuspicious neighbour, 'Look at the steps I have taken. I haveconsulted not only the police but even Sherlock Holmes.'"The inspector laughed.
4. "I think there will be no difficulty in clearing it up," saidLestrade, grimly.
5. "Now, my dear Hopkins, draw up and warm your toes," said he. "Here'sa cigar, and the doctor has a prescription containing hot water anda lemon, which is good medicine on a night like this. It must besomething important which has brought you out in such a gale.""It is indeed, Mr. Holmes. I've had a bustling afternoon, Ipromise you. Did you see anything of the Yoxley case in the latesteditions?"
6. "Because I had a wire from Hilton Cubitt this morning. Youremember Hilton Cubitt, of the dancing men? He was to reachLiverpool Street at one-twenty. He may be here at any moment. I gatherfrom his wire that there have been some new incidents of importance."We had not long to wait, for our Norfolk squire came straight fromthe station as fast as a hansom could bring him. He was lookingworried and depressed, with tired eyes and a lined forehead."It's getting on my nerves, this business, Mr. Holmes," said he,as he sank, like a wearied man, into an armchair. "It's bad enoughto feel that you are surrounded by unseen, unknown folk, who have somekind of design upon you, but when, in addition to that, you knowthat it is just killing your wife by inches, then it becomes as muchas flesh and blood can endure. She's wearing away under it- justwearing away before my eyes."

1. "Thank you," said Holmes. "I don't think that I need intrude uponyour time and patience any more." With a last word of caution thathe should say nothing as to our researches, we turned our faceswestward once more.
2. "You come at a crisis Watson," said he. "If this paper remains blue, all is well. If it turns red, it means a man's life." He dipped itinto the test-tube and it flushed at once into a dull, dirtycrimson. "Hum! I thought as much!" he cried. "I will be at yourservice in an instant, Watson. You will find tobacco in the Persianslipper." He turned to his desk and scribbled off several telegrams, which were handed over to the page-boy. Then he threw himself downinto the chair opposite and drew up his knees until his fingersclasped round his long, thin shins.
3. "I hoped you might have something."
4、 "Well, I think we must wait for a little more material. After all,you have nothing to complain of. You have received your rent and he isnot a troublesome lodger, though he is certainly an unusual one. Hepays you well. and if he choses to lie concealed it is no directbusiness of yours. We have no excuse for an intrusion upon his privacyuntil we have some reason to think that there is a guilty reason forit. I've taken up the matter, and I won't lose sight of it. Reportto me if anything fresh occurs, and rely upon my assistance if itshould be needed.
5、 "You have been cruelly used," said Holmes.

"There cannot be the least doubt that he would have made a murderousattack upon me. It is, however, a game at which two may play. Thequestion now is whether we should take a premature lunch here, orrun our chance of starving before we reach the buffet at Newhaven."We made our way to Brussels that night and spent two days there, moving on upon the third day as far as Strasbourg. On the Mondaymorning Holmes had telegraphed to the London police, and in theevening we found a reply waiting for us at our hotel. Holmes tore itopen, and then with a bitter curse hurled it into the grate."I might have known it!" he groaned. "He has escaped!"

Our proceedings of that first morning did little to advance theinvestigation. It was marked, however, at the outset by an incidentwhich left the most sinister impression upon my mind. The approachto the spot at which the tragedy occurred is down a narrow, winding, country lane, While we made our way along it we heard the rattle ofa carriage coming towards us and stood aside to let it pass. As itdrove by us I caught a glimpse through the closed window of a horriblycontorted, grinning face glaring out at us. Those staring eyes andgnashing teeth flashed past us like a dreadful vision.

"'You must put it down, sir, to my real love for your son.'"'Exactly. I have already made every allowance upon that score. Imust ask you, however, to drop these inquiries. Every family has itsown inner knowledge and its own motives, which cannot always be madeclear to outsiders, however well-intentioned. My wife is anxious tohear something of Godfrey's past which you are in a position to tellher, but I would ask you to let the present and the future alone, Suchinquiries serve no useful purpose, sir, and place us in a delicate anddifficult position.'

She hesitated. Then she threw open the door. "Well, come in!" saidshe. "My husband is not afraid to face any man in the world." Sheclosed the door behind us and showed us into a sitting-room on theright side of the hall, turning up the gas as she left us. "Mr. Peterswill be with you in an instant," she said.

      As we left the house Lestrade remained in the front room, whilethe repentant constable opened the door to let us out. Holmes turnedon the step and held up something in his hand. The constable staredintently.}

Holmes seemed struck by the theory thus put forward, and hecontinued to walk up and down for some time, lost in thought andconsuming cigarette after cigarette.

"I felt angry at having been tricked by so elaborate a story as thatwhich he had told me. 'I was admiring your fuller's-earth,' said I; 'Ithink that I should be better able to advise you as to your machine ifI knew what the exact purpose was for which it was used.'"The instant that I uttered the words I regretted the rashness of myspeech. His face set hard, and a baleful light sprang up in his grayeyes.
