1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "The devil, sir, for all I know. It was at the window.""What was at the window, and when?"
2. "You will find it rather disconnected, I fear, and there may proveto be little relation between the different incidents of which Ispeak. On the very first day that I was at the Copper Beeches, Mr.Rucastle took me to a small outhouse which stands near the kitchendoor. As we approached it I heard the sharp rattling of a chain, andthe sound as of a large animal moving about.
3. Ferguson looked at me with a question in his eyes.
4. "It is certainly delicate," said my friend with an amused smile,"but I have not been struck up to now with its complexity. It has beena case for intellectual deduction, but when this original intellectualdeduction is confirmed point by point by quite a number of independentincidents, then the subjective becomes objective and we can sayconfidently that we have reached our goal. I had, in fact, reachedit before we left Baker Street, and the rest has merely beenobservation and confirmation."
5. "First of all, I wish to impress upon you that the boy certainlyleft of his own free-will. He got down from his window and he wentoff, either alone or with someone. That is sure."
6. "A beautiful neighbourhood, and full of the most interestingassociations. You remember, Watson, that it was near there that wetook Archie Stamford, the forger. Now, Miss Violet, what hashappened to you, near Farnham, on the borders of Surrey?"The young lady, with great clearness and composure, made thefollowing curious statement:

1. "I can make a couple out of black silk."
2. Inspector Baynes's small eyes twinkled with pleasure.
3. "My dear Watson, Professor Moriarty is not a man who lets thegrass grow under his feet. I went out about midday to transact somebusiness in Oxford Street. As I passed the corner which leads fromBentinck Street on to the Welbeck Street crossing a two-horse vanfuriously driven whizzed round and was on me like a flash. I sprangfor the foot-path and saved myself by the fraction of a second. Thevan dashed round by Marylebone Lane and was gone in an instant. I keptto the pavement after that, Watson, but as I walked down Vere Street abrick came down from the roof of one of the houses and was shatteredto fragments at my feet. I called the police and had the placeexamined. There were slates and bricks piled up on the roofpreparatory to some repairs, and they would have me believe that thewind had toppled over one of these. Of course I knew better, but Icould prove nothing. I took a cab after that and reached mybrother's rooms in Pall Mall, where I spent the day. Now I have comeround to you, and on my way I was attacked by a rough with a bludgeon.I knocked him down, and the police have him in custody; but I can tellyou with the most absolute confidence that no possible connection willever be traced between the gentleman upon whose front teeth I havebarked my knuckles and the retiring mathematical coach, who is, Idaresay, working out problems upon a black-board ten miles away. Youwill not wonder, Watson, that my first act on entering your roomswas to close your shutters, and that I have been compelled to ask yourpermission to leave the house by some less conspicuous exit than thefront door."
4. "I am a very busy man. I am a doctor in practice."
5. "Well, that is part of the risk. There is no other possible way ofregaining these letters. The unfortunate lady has not the money, andthere are none of her people in whom she could confide. To-morrow isthe last day of grace, and unless we can get the letters to-night,this villain will be as good as his word and will bring about herruin. I must, therefore, abandon my client to her fate or I mustplay this last card. Between ourselves, Watson, it's a sporting duelbetween this fellow Milverton and me. He had, as you saw, the bestof the first exchanges, but my self-respect and my reputation areconcerned to fight it to a finish."
6. "Holmes!"

1. "Got him! Got whom, Mr. Holmes?"
2. "You may conceivably have overlooked it."
3. "So I trust, Watson, so I trust" said Holmes, gravely. "There issome deep intrigue going on round that little woman, and it is ourduty to see that no one molests her upon that last journey. I think,Watson, that we must spare time to run down together on Saturdaymorning and make sure that this curious and inclusive investigationhas no untoward ending."
4. Holmes gave an enigmatic smile.
5. "His Grace is never very friendly with anyone. He is completelyimmersed in large public questions, and is rather inaccessible toall ordinary emotions. But he was always kind to the boy in his ownway."
6. "See if you can read it, Watson," said he, with a smile. It contained no word, but this little line of dancing men:(See illustration.)

1. "Now, let us calmly define our position, Watson," he continued as weskirted the cliffs together. "Let us get a firm grip of the verylittle which we do know, so that when fresh facts arise we may beready to fit them into their places. I take it, in the first place, that neither of us is prepared to admit diabolical intrusions into theaffairs of men. Let us begin by ruling that entirely out of our minds.Very good. There remain three persons who have been grievouslystricken by some conscious or unconscious human agency. That is firmground. Now, where did this occur? Evidently, assuming his narrativeto be true, it was immediately after Mr. Mortimer Tregennis had leftthe room. That is a very important point. The presumption is that itwas within a few minutes afterwards. The cards still lay upon thetable. It was already past their usual hour for bed. Yet they hadnot changed their position or pushed back their chairs. I repeat, then, that the occurrence was immediately after his departure, and notlater than eleven o'clock last night.
2. "You have done wonders- wonders!" he cried when he had heard thenarrative. "But if these injuries are as terrible as Dr. Watsondescribes, then surely our purpose of thwarting the marriage issufficiently gained without the use of this horrible book."Holmes shook his head.
3. "When was it found?"
4、 He spoke now with a feverish energy, the long hands twitching andjerking as he motioned me away.
5、 "`Where are they all, Maggie?' I cried.

There was something that touched me as I read this letter, somethingpitiable in the reiterated appeals to bring Holmes. So moved was Ithat even had it been a difficult matter I should have tried it, butof course I knew well that Holmes loved his art, so that he was everas ready to bring his aid as his client could be to receive it. Mywife agreed with me that not a moment should be lost in laying thematter before him, and so within an hour of breakfast-time I foundmyself back once more in the old rooms in Baker Street.Holmes was seated at his side-table clad in his dressing-gown andworking hard over a chemical investigation. A large curved retortwas boiling furiously in the bluish flame of a Bunsen burner, andthe distilled drops were condensing into a two-litre measure. Myfriend hardly glanced up as I entered, and I, seeing that hisinvestigation must be of importance, seated myself in an armchairand waited. He dipped into this bottle or that, drawing out a fewdrops of each with his glass pipette, and finally brought thetest-tube containing a solution over to the table. In his right handhe held a slip of litmus-paper.

      "Who was he?" asked Holmes.

"That it was written in a train. The good writing representsstations, the bad writing movement, and the very bad writing passingover points. A scientific expert would pronounce at once that this wasdrawn up on a suburban line, since nowhere save in the immediatevicinity of a great city could there be so quick a succession ofpoints. Granting that his whole journey was occupied in drawing up thewill, then the train was an express, only stopping once betweenNorwood and London Bridge."

      "I will, Miss Turner."

{ "I see that you have had some great trouble," responded Holmes."God knows I have!-a trouble which is enough to unseat my reason, sosudden and so terrible is it. Public disgrace I might have faced, although I am a man whose character has never yet borne a stain.Private affliction also is the lot of every man; but the two comingtogether, and in so frightful a form, have been enough to shake myvery soul. Besides, it is not I alone. The very noblest in the landmay suffer unless some way be found out of this horrible affair.""Pray compose yourself, sir," said Holmes, "and let me have aclear account of who you are and what it is that has befallen you.""My name," answered our visitor, "is probably familiar to your ears.I am Alexander Holder, of the banking firm of Holder & Stevenson, ofThreadneedle Street."

      He flicked the horse with his whip, and we dashed away through theendless succession of sombre and deserted streets, which widenedgradually, until we were flying across a broad balustraded bridge,with the murky river flowing sluggishly beneath us. Beyond lay anotherdull wilderness of bricks and mortar, its silence broken only by theheavy, regular footfall of the policeman, or the songs and shouts ofsome belated party of revellers. A dull wrack was drifting slowlyacross the sky, and a star or two twinkled dimly here and therethrough the rifts of the clouds' Holmes drove in silence, with hishead sunk upon his breast, and the air of a man who is lost inthought, while I sat beside him, curious to learn what this newquest might be which seemed to tax his powers so sorely, and yetafraid to break in upon the current of his thoughts. We had drivenseveral miles, and were beginning to get to the fringe of the beltof suburban villas, when he shook himself, shrugged his shoulders, andlit up his pipe with the air of a man who has satisfied himself thathe is acting for the best.}

"I thought I might surprise you. Mycroft draws four hundred andfifty pounds a year, remains a subordinate, has no ambitions of anykind, will receive neither honour nor title, but remains the mostindispensable man in the country."

"`And he is admirably suited for it,' the other answered. `Hehas every requirement. I cannot recall when I have seen anythingso fine.' He took a step backward, cocked his head on one side, and gazed at my hair until I felt quite bashful. Then suddenly heplunged forward, wrung my hand, and congratulated me warmly on mysuccess.
