1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 The truth is that Mrs. Hale was not the only one who had athought on this score. The housemaid who had welcomed Hurstwoodhad her opinion also. She had no particular regard for Carrie, whom she took to be cold and disagreeable. At the same time, shehad a fancy for the merry and easy-mannered Drouet, who threw hera pleasant remark now and then, and in other ways extended herthe evidence of that regard which he had for all members of thesex. Hurstwood was more reserved and critical in his manner. Hedid not appeal to this bodiced functionary in the same pleasantway. She wondered that he came so frequently, that Mrs. Drouetshould go out with him this afternoon when Mr. Drouet was absent. She gave vent to her opinions in the kitchen where the cook was.As a result, a hum of gossip was set going which moved about thehouse in that secret manner common to gossip.
2. Hurstwood listened with some astonishment. He felt that she hadjust cause for feeling as she did, and yet he wished that hecould straighten this thing out quickly. Shortly the conductorwould come through for the tickets. He wanted no noise, notrouble of any kind. Before everything he must make her quiet.
3. "I can do something. I'm not down yet. There's a lot of thingscoming to me if I want to go after them."
4. Here, then, was Carrie, established in a pleasant fashion, freeof certain difficulties which most ominously confronted her, laden with many new ones which were of a mental order, andaltogether so turned about in all of her earthly relationshipsthat she might well have been a new and different individual. She looked into her glass and saw a prettier Carrie than she hadseen before; she looked into her mind, a mirror prepared of herown and the world's opinions, and saw a worse. Between these twoimages she wavered, hesitating which to believe.
5. "I'll tell you, Carrie, if you'll be quiet. I want you to comealong with me to another city,"
6. Carrie looked and beheld a new contract made out like the otherone, with the exception of the new figures of salary and time. With a hand trembling from excitement she affixed her name.

1. "First call for dinner in the dining-car," a Pullman servitor wasannouncing, as he hastened through the aisle in snow-white apronand jacket.
2. Thus the first hour of misgiving was swept away.
3. Carrie stepped along easily enough after they got out of the carat Thirty-fourth Street, but soon fixed her eyes upon the lovelycompany which swarmed by and with them as they proceeded. Shenoticed suddenly that Mrs. Vance's manner had rather stiffenedunder the gaze of handsome men and elegantly dressed ladies, whose glances were not modified by any rules of propriety. Tostare seemed the proper and natural thing. Carrie found herselfstared at and ogled. Men in flawless top-coats, high hats, andsilver-headed walking sticks elbowed near and looked too ofteninto conscious eyes. Ladies rustled by in dresses of stiffcloth, shedding affected smiles and perfume. Carrie noticedamong them the sprinkling of goodness and the heavy percentage ofvice. The rouged and powdered cheeks and lips, the scented hair, the large, misty, and languorous eye, were common enough. With astart she awoke to find that she was in fashion's crowd, onparade in a show place--and such a show place! Jewellers' windowsgleamed along the path with remarkable frequency. Florist shops, furriers, haberdashers, confectioners--all followed in rapidsuccession. The street was full of coaches. Pompous doormen inimmense coats, shiny brass belts and buttons, waited in front ofexpensive salesrooms. Coachmen in tan boots, white tights, andblue jackets waited obsequiously for the mistresses of carriageswho were shopping inside. The whole street bore the flavour ofriches and show, and Carrie felt that she was not of it. Shecould not, for the life of her, assume the attitude and smartnessof Mrs. Vance, who, in her beauty, was all assurance. She couldonly imagine that it must be evident to many that she was theless handsomely dressed of the two. It cut her to the quick, andshe resolved that she would not come here again until she lookedbetter. At the same time she longed to feel the delight ofparading here as an equal. Ah, then she would be happy!
4. "She just feels a little curious, I guess," ventured Minnie."Everything is so new."
5. For an hour he thought over this plausible statement of thetangle. He wanted to tell them about his wife, but couldn't. Hefinally narrowed it down to an assertion that he was light-headedfrom entertaining friends, had found the safe open, and havinggone so far as to take the money out, had accidentally closed it.This act he regretted very much. He was sorry he had put them toso much trouble. He would undo what he could by sending themoney back--the major portion of it. The remainder he would payup as soon as he could. Was there any possibility of his beingrestored? This he only hinted at.
6. Every eye was fixed on Carrie, still proud and scornful. Theymoved as she moved. Their eyes were with her eyes.

1. Carrie thanked him and walked briskly out, while the young mangazed after her through one of the side windows of his gildedcoop.
2. "Why, yes, didn't you know that? Why, he's manager of the GrandOpera House."
3. "Never mind what you were just. Keep your ears open."
4. "You don't say so!" said the manager.
5. "What good will it do?" he asked, holding the same strain offeeling.
6. It was apathy with Hurstwood, resulting from his inability to seehis way out. Each month drew from his small store. Now, he hadonly five hundred dollars left, and this he hugged, half feelingas if he could stave off absolute necessity for an indefiniteperiod. Sitting around the house, he decided to wear some oldclothes he had. This came first with the bad days. Only once heapologised in the very beginning:

1. The man wrote an order on a small card. "Take that to ourbarns," he said, "and give it to the foreman. He'll show youwhat to do."
2. She would look at him with large, pleased eyes.
3. The pieces of leather came from the girl at the machine to herright, and were passed on to the girl at her left. Carrie saw atonce that an average speed was necessary or the work would pileup on her and all those below would be delayed. She had no timeto look about, and bent anxiously to her task. The girls at herleft and right realised her predicament and feelings, and, in away, tried to aid her, as much as they dared, by working slower.
4、 "Those fellows can't win," he thought.
5、 "Oh, oh," she said, "she doesn't know what she has done."

He did not intend to say any more. Now, if he should appear onthe scene with a few friends, he could say that he had been urgedto come along. Drouet had a desire to wipe out the possibilityof confusion.

Minnie was thinking of the resource which Carrie's board wouldadd. It would pay the rent and would make the subject ofexpenditure a little less difficult to talk about with herhusband. But if Carrie was going to think of running around inthe beginning there would be a hitch somewhere. Unless Carriesubmitted to a solemn round of industry and saw the need of hardwork without longing for play, how was her coming to the city toprofit them? These thoughts were not those of a cold, hardnature at all. They were the serious reflections of a mind whichinvariably adjusted itself, without much complaining, to suchsurroundings as its industry could make for it.

"Don't you think," said Carrie weakly, noticing that it had notbeen proved yet whether the members of the company knew theirlines, let alone the details of expression, "that it would bebetter if we just went through our lines once to see if we knowthem? We might pick up some points."
