1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 What Sherlock Holmes was about to suggest will never be known, forat this moment the door opened and a young lady was shown into theroom. As she appeared Mr. Bennett sprang up with a cry and ran forwardwith his hands out to meet those which she had herself outstretched."Edith, dear! Nothing the matter, I hope?"
2. "Nothing at all, sir."
3. "It's charcoal," he cried. "Give it time. It will clear."Peering in, we could see that the only light in the room came from adull blue flame which flickered from a small brass tripod in thecentre. It threw a livid, unnatural circle upon the floor, while inthe shadows beyond we saw the vague loom of two figures which crouchedagainst the wall. From the open door there reeked a horrible poisonousexhalation which set us gasping and coughing. Holmes rushed to the topof the stairs to draw in the fresh air, and then, dashing into theroom, he threw up the window and hurled the brazen tripod out into thegarden.
4. "Look here, Watson," he said when the cloth was cleared; "just sitdown in this chair and let me preach to you for a little. I don't knowquite what to do, and I should value your advice. Light a cigar andlet me expound."
5. "Could you go as far as Aldershot to-morrow?'
6. With a frightened look at the clock our strange visitor literallyran to the door and disappeared.

1. "I perceive also that whoever addressed the envelope had to go andinquire as to the address."
2. "I'd be very glad if you could tell me where that lady may be,"Peters answered coolly. "I've a bill against her for nearly ahundred pounds, and nothing to show for it but a couple of trumperypendants that the dealer would hardly look at. She attached herself toMrs. Peters and me at Baden- it is a fact that I was using anothername at the time- and she stuck on to us until we came to London. Ipaid her bill and her ticket. Once in London, she gave us the slip, and, as I say, left these out-of-date jewels to pay her bills. Youfind her, Mr. Holmes, and I'm your debtor."
3. "Fine birds they were, too. Now where did you get them from?"To my surprise the question provoked a burst of anger from thesalesman.
4. "`Oh, merely a couple of hundred a year, but the work isslight, and it need not interfere very much with one's otheroccupations.'
5. "How are you, Mr. Reuben Hayes?" said Holmes.
6. "You have done wisely," said my friend. "But have you told me all?""Yes, all."

1. "I hope," said the lady, "that you have not come to cross-examine meagain?"
2. "Mercer is since your time," said Holmes. "He is my generalutility man who looks up routine business. It was important to knowsomething of the man with whom our professor was so secretlycorresponding. His nationality connects up with the Prague visit.""Thank goodness that something connects with something," said I. "Atpresent we seem to be faced by a long series of inexplicable incidentswith no bearing upon each other. For example, what possible connectioncan there be between an angry wolfhound and a visit to Bohemia, oreither of them with a man crawling down a passage at night? As to yourdates, that is the biggest mystification of all."
3. "'My dear, dear son, now that approaching disgrace begins todarken the closing years of my life, I can write with all truth andhonesty that it is not the terror of the law, it is not the loss of myposition in the county, nor is it my fall in the eyes of all whohave known me, which cuts me to the heart; but it is the thoughtthat you should come to blush for me-you who love me and who haveseldom, I hope, had reason to do other than respect me. But if theblow falls which is forever hanging over me, then I should wish you toread this, that you may know straight from me how far I have been toblame. On the other hand, if all should go well (which may kind GodAlmighty grant!), then, if by any chance this paper should be stillundestroyed and should fall into your hands, I conjure you, by all youhold sacred, by the memory of your dear mother, and by the lovewhich has been between us, to hurl it into the fire and to nevergive one thought to it again.
4. "I'll go now. Anything more?"
5. "But why should this man pretend to be his own brother?""Well, that is pretty clear also. There are evidently only two ofthem in it. The other is impersonating you at the office. This oneacted as your engager, and then found that he could not find you anemployer without admitting a third person into his plot. That he wasmost unwilling to do. He changed his appearance as far as he could, and trusted that the likeness, which you could not fail to observe, would be put down to a family resemblance. But for the happy chance ofthe gold stuffing, your suspicions would probably never have beenaroused."
6. "'That is very handsome' said I. When should I take over my newduties?'

1. "The night was fine, but still it was a very weary vigil. Ofcourse it has the sort of excitement about it that the sportsman feelswhen he lies beside the water course and waits for the big game. Itwas very long, though-almost as long, Watson, as when you and I waitedin that deadly room when we looked into the little problem of theSpeckled Band. There was a church-clock down at Woking which struckthe quarters, and I thought more than once that it had stopped. Atlast, however, about two in the morning, I suddenly heard the gentlesound of a bolt being pushed back and the creaking of a key. Amoment later the servants' door was opened, and Mr. Joseph Harrisonstepped out into the moonlight."
2. "Now that you mention it, it was not large. It might have been theSpectator. However, I had little thought to spare upon such details, for a second man was seated with his back to the window, and I couldswear that this second man was Godfrey. I could not see his face, but I knew the familiar slope of his shoulders. He was leaning uponhis elbow in an attitude of great melancholy, his body turnedtowards the fire. I was hesitating as to what I should do when therewas a sharp tap on my shoulder, and there was Colonel Emsworthbeside me.
3. Stackhurst knit his brows in thought.
4、 "No; his needs were very simple and his salary ample. He had saved afew hundreds, and we were to marry at the New Year."
5、 "Oh, I have my hand upon him. He and the two mates, are, as Ilearn, the only native-born Americans in the ship. The others areFinns and Germans. I know, also, that they were all three awayfrom the ship last night. I had it from the stevedore who hasbeen loading their cargo. By the time that their sailing-shipreaches Savannah the mail-boat will have carried this letter, andthe cable will have informed the police of Savannah that thesethree gentlemen are badly wanted here upon a charge of murder."There is ever a flaw, however, in the best laid of humanplans, and the murderers of John Openshaw were never to receivethe orange pips which would show them that another, as cunning andas resolute as themselves, was upon their track. Very long andvery severe were the equinoctial gales that year. We waited longfor news of the Lone Star of Savannah, but none ever reached us.We did at last hear that somewhere far out in the Atlantic ashattered stern-post of the boat was seen swinging in the troughof a wave, with the letters "L. S." carved upon it, and that isall which we shall ever know of the fate of the Lone Star..1893

"I think that there is a small experiment which we may tryto-morrow, Watson, in order to throw some light on the matter.Meanwhile, if we mean to keep up our characters, I suggest that wehave our host in for a glass of his own wine and hold some highconverse upon eels and dace, which seems to be the straight road tohis affections. We may chance to come upon some useful local gossip inthe process."

"I'll tell you what I know about Effie's history. She was a widowwhen I met her first, though quite young-only twenty-five. Her namethen was Mrs. Hebron. She went out to America when she was young andlived in the town of Atlanta, where she married this Hebron, who was alawyer with a good practice. They had one child, but the yellowfever broke out badly in the place, and both husband and child died ofit. I have seen his death certificate. This sickened her of America, and she came back to live with a maiden aunt at Pinner, inMiddlesex. I may mention that her husband had left her comfortablyoff, and that she had a capital of about four thousand five hundredpounds, which had been so well invested by him that it returned anaverage of seven per cent. She had only been six months at Pinner whenI met her; we fell in love with each other, and we married a few weeksafterwards.

"No, Mr. Holmes, that is the amazing part of it. There is nopossible way of reaching the window- and yet he was there.""The date being September 5th," said Holmes. "That certainlycomplicates matters."

{ "It is unfortunately more than possible, it is certain. Neitheryou nor your son knew the true character of this man when you admittedhim into your family circle. He is one of the most dangerous men inEngland-a ruined gambler, an absolutely desperate villain, a manwithout heart or conscience. Your niece knew nothing of such men. Whenhe breathed his vows to her, as he had done to a hundred before her,she flattered herself that she alone had touched his heart. Thedevil knows best what he said, but at least she became his tool andwas in the habit of seeing him nearly every evening."

      "Ah, what has happened to the Lady Frances? Is she alive or dead?There is our problem. She is a lady of precise habits, and for fouryears it has been her invariable custom to write every second weekto Miss Dobney, her old governess, who has long retired and lives inCamberwell. It is this Miss Dobney who has consulted me. Nearly fiveweeks have passed without a word. The last letter was from the HotelNational at Lausanne. Lady Frances seems to have left there andgiven no address. The family are anxious, and as they areexceedingly wealthy no sum will be spared if we can clear the matterup."}

"Now I come to the critical part of my argument. The naturalaction of a man in pursuing a little boy would be to run after him. Hewould know that he could overtake him. But the German does not doso. He turns to his bicycle. I am told that he was an excellentcyclist. He would not do this, if he did not see that the boy had someswift means of escape."

"It was a joke, my good sir- a practical joke, nothing more," hewhined incessantly. "I assure you, sir, that I simply concealed myselfin order to see the effect of my disappearance, and I am sure that youwould not be so unjust as to imagine that I would have allowed anyharm to befall poor young Mr. McFarlane."
