1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "There's no use explaining to you about this," he said at last."There's no use of your asking me. I'm no fool, you know. Iknow just what you can do and what you can't. You can create alot of trouble if you want to. I know that all right, but itwon't help you to get the money. Now, I've made up my mind whatto do. I've already written Fitzgerald and Moy, so there'snothing I can say. You wait until you hear more from them."
2. Then his voice dropped even lower, and his mind half lost thefancy it had.
3. Her first move was to buy a shirt waist, and in studying theseshe found how little her money would buy--how much, if she couldonly use all. She forgot that if she were alone she would haveto pay for a room and board, and imagined that every cent of hereighteen could be spent for clothes and things that she liked.
4. "Nobody knows us down there," said one, a gentleman whose facewas a slight improvement over gross ignorance and sensuality. Healways wore a silk hat of most imposing proportions. "We canhave a good time." His left eye moved with just the semblance ofa wink. "You want to come along, George."
5. "Yes," he rejoined.
6. There was something delicate and lonely in her voice, but hecould not hear it. He had not the poetry in him that would seeka woman out under such circumstances and console her for thetragedy of life. Instead, he struck a match and lighted the gas.

1. "All right," she replied, but he could see that she was thinkingthat it was a curious thing. Before he went she asked him a fewmore questions, and that irritated him. He began to feel thatshe was a disagreeable attachment.
2. "Well, I want to know about it," she reiterated.
3. The cabby beat his horse into a sort of imitation gallop whichwas fairly fast, however. On the way Hurstwood thought what todo. Reaching the number, he hurried up the steps and did notspare the bell in waking the servant.
4. "I couldn't get anything else," said Carrie frankly.
5. "Shall I wear my hair as I did yesterday?" she asked, as she cameout with several articles of apparel pending.
6. "Supposing you get 'em and take 'em out to dinner?"

1. "It would be nice if you could get some place," said Carrie, prompted by anxiety and hope.
2. In all of Carrie's actions there was a touch of misgiving. Thedeeper she sank into the entanglement, the more she imagined thatthe thing hung upon the few remaining things she had not done.Since she had not done these, there was a way out.
3. Once these things were in her hand, on her person, she mightdream of giving them up; the method by which they came mightintrude itself so forcibly that she would ache to be rid of thethought of it, but she would not give them up. "Put on the oldclothes--that torn pair of shoes," was called to her by herconscience in vain. She could possibly have conquered the fearof hunger and gone back; the thought of hard work and a narrowround of suffering would, under the last pressure of conscience, have yielded, but spoil her appearance?--be old-clothed and poor-appearing?--never!
4. "Mr. McManus," called the man at the desk, "this young womanwants to see you."
5. Amid the tinsel and shine of her state walked Carrie, unhappy. As when Drouet took her, she had thought: "Now I am lifted intothat which is best"; as when Hurstwood seemingly offered her thebetter way: "Now am I happy." But since the world goes its waypast all who will not partake of its folly, she now found herselfalone. Her purse was open to him whose need was greatest. Inher walks on Broadway, she no longer thought of the elegance ofthe creatures who passed her. Had they more of that peace andbeauty which glimmered afar off, then were they to be envied.
6. He was forced to take his feet. It was too much to think of andsit still.

1. Hurstwood was a man of authority and some fine feeling, and itirritated him excessively to find himself surrounded more andmore by a world upon which he had no hold, and of which he had alessening understanding.
2. In all her stay in the city, Carrie had never heard of this showyparade; had never even been on Broadway when it was taking place. On the other hand, it was a familiar thing to Mrs. Vance, who notonly knew of it as an entity, but had often been in it, goingpurposely to see and be seen, to create a stir with her beautyand dispel any tendency to fall short in dressiness bycontrasting herself with the beauty and fashion of the town.
3. He saw some energetic charging by the police and arrests beingmade.
4、 "Well, well!" said a voice. In the first glance she beheldDrouet. He was not only rosy-cheeked, but radiant. He was theessence of sunshine and good-humour. "Why, how are you, Carrie?"he said. "You're a daisy. Where have you been?"
5、 "What do you want to do," he smiled, "go without them?"

He was not a man who traveled much, but when he did, he had beenaccustomed to take her along. On one occasion recently a localaldermanic junket had been arranged to visit Philadelphia--ajunket that was to last ten days. Hurstwood had been invited.

"Now, let me see," said Hurstwood, looking over Carrie's shouldervery deferentially. "What have you?" He studied for a moment."That's rather good," he said.

  • 黄敬 08-10

"Very well," said Hurstwood. "Rather anxious about you though. You'd better go out now and cheer her up."

{ "Of course I do," he said pettishly, troubling only a little overthe disgrace of the insinuation.

And now Carrie had attained that which in the beginning seemedlife's object, or, at least, such fraction of it as human beingsever attain of their original desires. She could look about onher gowns and carriage, her furniture and bank account. Friendsthere were, as the world takes it--those who would bow and smilein acknowledgment of her success. For these she had once craved.Applause there was, and publicity--once far off, essentialthings, but now grown trivial and indifferent. Beauty also--hertype of loveliness--and yet she was lonely. In her rocking-chairshe sat, when not otherwise engaged--singing and dreaming.

The place smelled of the oil of the machines and the new leather--a combination which, added to the stale odours of the building, was not pleasant even in cold weather. The floor, thoughregularly swept every evening, presented a littered surface. Notthe slightest provision had been made for the comfort of theemployees, the idea being that something was gained by givingthem as little and making the work as hard and unremunerative aspossible. What we know of foot-rests, swivel-back chairs,dining-rooms for the girls, clean aprons and curling ironssupplied free, and a decent cloak room, were unthought of. Thewashrooms were disagreeable, crude, if not foul places, and thewhole atmosphere was sordid.
